It's pretty heavily implied that he never escaped. I also don't understand your critique about making the characters have a happy ending. It's just such a bland scare without any soul or personality. In fact, generic is a good word of the experience as a whole. There is no assault on reality other than generic spooky imagery like Enslin's severed head and an unearthly glow from the walls opening up. I really can't see anything like what you discuss feeling from the short story. The story misses all of the wonderful psychological horror and experiences of the main character and instead just calls the room spooky because it is without further explanation like a more poorly executed version of Wells' "The Red Room."Īs soon as the room itself comes into play in the story, it loses all sense of pacing. The only thing I prefer about the short story to the movie is the beginning, and the added emphasis and build-up.
